About the Spookaluca Saga

About the Spookaluca Saga

“So here we are, at the threshold of a grand, cosmic adventure.”
– Jon Beebe

Creating the Spookaluca trilogy has been one of the most exhilarating and transformative journeys of my life… or, as I like to call it, my midlife crisis. The magic, the chaos, the laughs, and even the tears poured into this world have been far more than a creative exercise; they’ve been a profound personal odyssey filled with more twists and turns than my intestines after eating gluten or shellfish.

From Inspiration to Reality

The spark for Spookaluca came from a chance conversation with my childhood best friend, Cara, about the legendary Rainbow Shoes, a silly concept from our younger years. This simple inquiry turned into a creative tsunami that swept me away into countless all-nighters drafting character arcs and narrative plots. At times, it felt like the characters were holding me hostage, and I was simply their stenographer.

It has always been my dream to be an author, though I never expected that my debut would be in the form of graphic novels. Inspired by literary greats such as David Sedaris, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tad Williams, Stephen Lawhead, Stephen King, Terry Goodkind, Douglas Adams, George R.R. Martin, Patrick Rothfuss, Madeleine L’Engle, C.S. Lewis, Lloyd Alexander and Robert Jordan, I sought to imbue my work with a mix of humor, depth and fantasy.

My imagination has long been fueled by a medley of fantasy and adventure movies from my childhood. Classics like LabyrinthThe NeverEnding StoryLegendKrullPee-Wee’s Big Adventure, and Willow shaped my love for the fantastical. Video game series like Phantasy StarFinal Fantasy, and The Legend of Zelda added hours of questing and narrative intrigue to my formative years.

But it was animated series like Avatar: The Last AirbenderFullmetal Alchemist and My Hero Academia that brought depth and heart to my creative process, infusing the Spookaluca trilogy with a sense of profound purpose and emotional resonance.

To my own astonishment, it took me only around three months to write the first draft of the trilogy. The story seemed to flow naturally, as if it had been waiting for an opportunity to spill onto the page. The characters became my best friends, and I fell in love with each of them; yes, even the baddies.

Beyond the Absurd

This trilogy has brought me to exhilarating heights and exhausting lows. Writing Spookaluca has been an intimate exercise in battling inner demons while embracing newfound strengths. It’s forced me to re-evaluate past triumphs and traumas, all wrapped in the absurdity of a fantasy adventure. Imagine therapy, but with more mythical creatures and fewer co-pays.

Beneath the humor and chaos, the Spookaluca trilogy is deeply philosophical, exploring love in all its forms; from romantic love to loving your enemies, to the bonds between friends and family, unrequited love, and forbidden love. It’s a social and cultural commentary, where every nuance and detail is packed with layers of hidden meanings, symbolism, and lore. Expect to encounter multiple Easter eggs, inside jokes, historical references, mythological allusions, pop culture nods, television parodies and celebrity spoofs woven into every page. My meticulous OCD made sure of it.

Looking Forward

I can’t wait for you to immerse yourself in the vibrant, chaotic world of Spookaluca. Whether it’s challenging friends to a game of Aduno Tal, cheering for your favorite Whomp’Em team (it’s origin is as ridiculous as it sounds), or exploring the myriad of unique cultures, there’s a little something for everyone in this universe.

As I continue to refine and bring this trilogy to life, your support and enthusiasm keep me motivated. From sharing my updates on social media to adopting a character via the Golden Guardian Club, every bit of engagement helps bring Spookaluca closer to your hands.
