Frequently Asked Questions

“This may just be my midlife crisis… Yet in quiet moments of reflection, I know it’s just my chrysalis stage. And I can’t wait to fly.”
– Jon Beebe

The process of creating the characters, story and Spookaluca universe has brought me some of the most exciting and terrifying moments of my life.

Suffice it to say, It’s been an incredibly emotional and psychologically charged journey. Through the world and characters I created, I’ve been able to face inner demons, uncover new strengths, and learn to view and embrace past triumphs and traumas from a new paradigm.

Anyone who’s spoken with me about the Spookaluca trilogy can tell you it ignites a palpable passion within me. “This is what you’re supposed to be doing with your life,” people often comment. I think they’re right.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What inspired the Spookaluca series? How long did it take you to write it?
A: I was inspired to write about Spookaluca after reconnecting with my childhood “wife” and bestie, Cara. Randomly, she asked me about the legendary Rainbow Shoes and their magical powers, often mentioned in absurd stories from my younger years.

I recalled fond memories of Timmy, Tina the Tunabear, Holly the Holly (Kya), Bolivar and Spookaluca. “I wonder what ever happened to Timmy?” I thought to myself… “I should write his story.”

Almost immediately, a creative tsunami of unique and diverse supporting characters and new adventures flooded my mind. Honestly, I couldn’t stop it. I would often stay up until 4 a.m. in a state of creative flow, either writing the plot or designing first drafts of the characters’ artwork. It was as if they were already living and breathing, and I was simply documenting what I saw; the story wrote itself. In just three months, I had the bones of the narrative and character arcs of the trilogy outlined.

Q: My son/daughter/niece/nephew loves graphic novels. Is it safe for them?
A: It’s definitely not intended for children. The story and imagery contains adult language, exaggerated (comical) violence, use of drugs and alcohol, potty humor, light nudity and sexual innuendo. Yet at its core, it’s an empowering love story in the guise of an absolutely absurd fantasy adventure. Would I let a 13-year-old read it? Sure.

Q: I noticed a lot of rainbows, is this a LGBT series?
A: Not really. While I am a proud bisexual, and there are a few LGBT characters and themes, the story is universal, and isn’t focused on sexuality. A rainbow can just be a rainbow sometimes. When writing the series, I used color psychology, theory and symbolism to drive home key themes (and for a few Easter eggs).

Q: When can I buy the books?
A: Not yet! This is the first time I’m making something this epic!

While all three books are written, I’ve still got a LOT of work ahead of me. From finalizing frames and specific dialogue, to the actual physical/digital production of the artwork by the incredible Francesco SalaThe current plan is to release a chapter at a time (across the three books) in succession. Be sure to sign-up for alerts (below) or adopt a character to help bring Spookaluca to life!

Q: Are you looking for a publisher, or will you self-publish?
A: The current plan is to self-publish, thus I’ll be promoting a Kickstarter campaign soon! However, I would entertain offers from publishers if they presented themselves.

Q: Beyond graphic novels, do you have bigger plans or aspirations for the series?
A: Originally, I had intended for Spookaluca to become an animated series. But, after sharing my general thoughts and original artwork with Rob Cohen, aka Milhouse from the Simpsons, he encouraged me to build an audience via graphic novels first. Luckily, my good friend and author, MG Buehrlen (and her family), stepped in to assist and encourage me to pursue the graphic novels full time.

While I still intend for the series to become an animated adventure, there are other aspects of the Spookaluca universe that are worth exploring. I can’t wait for people to wear the insignia of their favorite Magonian culture, snuggle with a stuffed Spookaluca plushie or challenge their friends to a match of the card game, Aduno Tal. I’ve already developed an encyclopedia for the series, and, who knows? Perhaps Whomp’Em leagues may be a great way for adults to relieve stress?

And, yes, all characters, logos, insignias, etc. are protected by trademark and copyright (via my business, QuirkWerk, LLC). Let me know if you want to license them. Tehehe.

Q: I was your friend, bully, teacher, family member, etc… Am I in the books?
A: Maybe. While names were obviously changed to protect identities, I definitely infused some heroes and villains from my past into the series. Ultimately, it’s a love story to everyone whom I’ve crossed paths with… even if you tripped me.

Q: Can I have a custom character in your book series?
A: Not quite yet, although there may be future sponsorship opportunities available. The Golden Guardian Club adoption program is for existing characters in need of additional character design, illustrated bodies, poses and glow-ups.

Q: What’s with all the vomit?
A: In the Spookaluca universe, the gods (known as Pūkas, as in puke) vomit their powers: from lightning to acid, fire to frost. They refer to it as “spitting.” Think of it like the Care Bear Stare on ketamine. But, rest assured, the story’s a lot deeper (and less smelly) than vomit.

Q: Where’s Spookaluca? I can’t seem to find him in any of the concept artwork!
A: Only Spooka knows… Look harder.

Q: What’s the purpose of this website?
A: Spookaluca.com is meant to introduce you to the Spookaluca universe. Eventually, I’ll use it to promote news and additional sponsorship opportunities. Yes, there’s a lot of information…  and there’s even more coming! I’d estimate (at launch), I’ve only covered less than a quarter of the characters, cultures and factoids. Don’t forget to sign up (below) for exclusive previews and new content alerts!

Q: Did you use AI to create your logos, characters and background imagery?
A1: For the logos and cultural emblems? No. The logos and icons are all original works I created from scratch.
A2: For the characters? No. I created the original character designs, then sent them to the amazing Francesco Sala for glow-ups! A3: For the background imagery? Yes. I used AI to generate the majority of the backgrounds used on this site: to give you an example of what the world looks and feels like in my mind’s eye. That said, when it comes to the actual production of the series, Francesco will be completing all of the artwork personally (AI free).

Q: How can I help make Spookaluca happen?
A: That’s easy! Share monthly Spookaluca updates on social media, sign up for alerts (below) and join the Golden Guardian Club to help fund character glow-ups today!

Be sure to sign up for alerts as I release more characters, races, magical items, cultures, and more!
