Meet the Characters: Hunka
“Every time I step on stage
I feel my temperature risin’
Higher and higher, it’s blazin’ through my soul
Girl, girl, girl, girl, I’m gonna set you on fire
I’m just Hunka (burning love).”
– Hunka, God of Flames
With his smoldering charm and fiery charisma, the Pūka HUNKA, known affectionately as the King of Flames, is as much a cultural icon as he is a deity.
A true rock star among gods, the phoenix moth monkey’s melodies have a way of melting audiences with their powerful resonance and emotional depth.
As the embodiment of fire itself, Hunka’s crooning voice flows like molten lava, capable of scorching the senses or soothing the soul, bringing tears to the eyes of those who hear him; and it’s not from the smoke. With hits like ‘Blaze Suede Shoes,’ ‘Smokehouse Rock’ and ‘Heartburn Hotel,’ he sets stages ablaze, much to the delight (or horror) of venue owners and insurance adjusters.
Hunka’s allure draws legions of devoted fans, particularly among young, impressionable females captivated by the King’s rhythmic gyrations and soulful melodies. Yet, among conservative Magonian parents, his influence remains a heated topic, fearing he might lead their daughters astray into dreams as wild and untamed as Hunka’s performances.
Despite this simmering controversy, his fan base continues to grow, charmed by the very element that defines him: fire, both a beacon of warmth and a force beyond containment.
“Savored smoked brisket with fiery delight
Now heartburn’s my companion all through the night
The sauce was blazing, hotter than a volcano
Ready to rock ‘n’ roll in the privy inferno”
– ‘Heartburn Hotel’ lyrics
Offstage, Hunka is humble and introverted, often shy and polite, a gentle soul in contrast to the explosive presence that ignites the hearts of audiences.
However, fame’s pressures sometimes lead Hunka to rely on illicit substances to maintain his fiery performances, a habit that sparks concern among his Pūka siblings. His peculiar taste for high-caloric foods adds to their worries… Known for enjoying binny butter, jam and bacon on a Folly Loaf or slow-cooked BBQ bolonish meatflowers, he has inspired generations of Flameborn pitmasters to perfect the art of barbecue.
In moments of conflict, Hunka ignites his magnificent flaming phoenix moth wings, ascending above the fray. From on high, he spits torrents of fire upon adversaries, transforming the chaos of battle into a roaring inferno.
When sparks fly and fans swoon, in every fire kindled, Hunka remains a symbol of burning love; reminding all that, sometimes, devotion requires a trusty fire extinguisher by your side.
